Vivian Chen
Biography
I was born and raised in Queens, New York City. Attended Stony Brook University intending to earn a Zoology degree but ended up graduating with a B.A. degree with a concentration in Painting and Ceramics. Struggled with finding work in the art field. I proceeded to work different odd-end jobs that were mostly in the hospitality field. During the COVID outbreak, I choose to leave my job to anchor down and really pursue my creative passions. So, here I am creating this website, taking product photography, and really re-honing the skills that I left behind. (Thanks Skillshare!) <3 I’m very lucky to have the support of my family and friends during this time. Without them, I wouldn’t have the courage to make the decision and commit to this art journey.
Mediums and Materials
I know this is probably looked down on but I really enjoy dabbling in all art mediums. I switch from digital arts (Procreate) to Watercolor, Gouache, Posca Markers, Oil, Acrylic, and even Epoxy Resin. Post Covid I would really love to dive back into Ceramics as well. I’m definitely guilty of being a Jane of all trades.
Impostor Syndrome & Personal Style?
This is something I definitely struggle with every day even now. As a child, all I wished for was to draw and paint realistically. Realism was the style I dreamed and practiced. The irony was everything I did come out looking like a cartoon. I was so sad and it made me really discouraged. But, honestly now looking back I am not surprised. I LOVED ANIME (obsessed) and cartoons. My body was just practicing what I literally watched every day. At least that’s what I tell myself now.
I’ve only recently come to embrace this cute, cartoon, anime style. Style is ever-changing and evolving so I don’t think there is ever a final form. Every few artworks I create I realize that there is a new technique or dash of magic that I want to include in my future art. I think finding your style just takes time and definitely the more art you create the closer you are to your next better self. Think of Goku from Dragon Ball Z. Every time we think “oh this must be his ultimate form, there is no way he can get more powerful than he is now” he proves us wrong. (That’s anime for you and poor Vegeta). #teamVegeta
Inspirational Artists - Make sure you check out these amazing and inspirational artists. They were definitely the bunch that gave me the courage to take the steps I am taking right now. All of them also have youtube and Instagram. Katnipp Illustrations, SaraFaber, Frannerd, AppleCheeks and BaeleeJae
The Ultimate inspiration is of course Mr. Miyazaki creator of Studio Ghibli.
Dreams & Goals
Create A LOT more art and to make more friends in the art field. Once I have more courage I want to attempt to record studio vlogs. Why studio vlogs? Studio vlogs from other artists have a special place in my heart. They provide inspiration and resources for new artists such as myself. Eventually, I want to give back to the art community and become someone else’s inspiration, support, and resource.
Momo & Kenshin
Momo and Kenshin are my 2 adorable spoiled Shiba Inus. They are on the older side of being 12 years old. Even though they are from the same liter their personality is completely 180 of each other. Momo is very shy with people but loves to interact with other dogs. Kenshin as known as “Grumpy Grandpa” loves to be lazy and petted by people but has no tolerance for cute, energetic little puppies and will quickly put them in their place. As predictable as this pair may be at this age, they still surprised me every day with cute quirky behaviors and actions.
Momo’s name was given spontaneously. I went to the breeder with the name Kirra in mind for her but when I saw how shy she was the first thing that came to my mind was the word Momo. Which didn’t have any exact meaning for me. I just felt that the word Momo gave off a shy feeling. She definitely loves being outside where she gets to be her wild self. Kenshin’s name comes from the character Himura Kenshin, who was a “manslayer” Samurai who turned kind, gentle, and protecting the weak. Yes, Kenshin slays men with his fur shedding. Attacking the immune system of anyone who is allergic to dogs and of course also with his cute loaf-like fluffiness.
